Carhartt Family Wines

Santa Barbara County is home to some of the most diverse and celebrated wine regions in California.

Within just a short drive, you can move from foggy, coastal Pinot Noir vineyards to sun-soaked hillsides producing Syrah and Cabernet Franc.

This rare variety originates from the geography of the area, characterized by east-west valleys that channel the Pacific Ocean’s influence inland.

Understanding the different regions is the key to understanding Santa Barbara wine. Each American Viticultural Area (AVA) offers its own climate, soils, and signature styles.

Santa Barbara Wine Regions

Santa Maria Valley AVA

One of California’s oldest appellations, the Santa Maria Valley has a long, cool growing season shaped by ocean breezes. It’s famous for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, often with bright acidity and minerality.

Sta. Rita Hills AVA

Carved by fog and wind from the Pacific, Sta. Rita Hills is a world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay region. The wines here are precise, layered, and often compared to Burgundy.

Santa Ynez Valley AVA

The largest AVA in Santa Barbara County, Santa Ynez stretches from cool western edges to warm eastern corners. This diversity allows an array of varietals to flourish.

Ballard Canyon AVA

A small but distinct appellation, Ballard Canyon is best known for Syrah. Wines here show a balance of ripe fruit and savory spice, with Rhône varietals leading the way.

Los Alamos Valley

Though not an official AVA, Los Alamos Valley is known for small, experimental vineyards and exciting new projects.

Lompoc Wine Ghetto

Less of a region and more of a community, the “Wine Ghetto” in Lompoc is a cluster of urban warehouse tasting rooms. It’s an essential stop for adventurous wine lovers.
